"The Survival Of The Computer As A Creative Tool"

Technical report No. 96/253
Alan Dorin

Abstract.

Human society is shaped by the artefacts it employs. The introduction of the computer is well and truly behind us, it now forms an integral part of Western living. This paper gives a personal account of the role the computer plays in the creation of digital cinema. We discuss the relationship between machine and computer artist / programmer and compare this to the relationship of a non-programmer and machine. We highlight the loss of simulation techniques as a means of describing a process of interest to the artist to be one unfortunate consequence of being a non-programmer / artist.
