Tropical Rainforest Image Gallery

This web page contains a selection of pictures which I took during a short visit to the Lamington National Park in South-Eastern Queensland, late 1997. Australia is widely perceived to be a continent of desert and scrub, however, what is less appreciated is that we have some truly superb rainforest habitats with many unique types of wildlife.

View of the caldera on the horizon.

Eucalyptus forest at the edge of the rainforest proper - typically a transitional region up to a kilometre or deeper.

A view down into the rainforest canopy - note the differences between the undergrowth and trees.

Another view down on to the canopy., taken from a walkway in the treetops.

Buttressed root structures above ground are characteristic of larger rainforest trees, a byproduct of shallow root structures.

Under the canopy, looking up, a large tree fern in the centre of the image.

Strangler Figs are common in Lamington National Park.

Yet another view from under the canopy, with a good specimen of the Staghorn visible, as well as a Stinging Tree.

The humble Magpie, This specimen posed for a photo at Pat's Bluff.

An immature King Parrot - it takes seven years for these birds to gain their characteristic orange-red head.

An adult King Parrot with its beautiful plumage.

A pair of Crimson Rosellas. These gregarious birds are very common in Lamington National Park.
