FIT5900 : Assignment Specification

In your assigned group of four students, choose one of the following problems.
Details about the answers you need to provide for assessment are given below.

1. Cartography

Task: Construct an interactive campus map.

Obtain a paper map of the Monash Clayton campus. Your task is to design and implement an interactive online version of this map. You will need to consider how best to utilize the special properties of interactive presentation (Simply duplicating the functionality of the paper map is not sufficient - think about how you can design a better map.)

2. Soccer Offside Rule

Task: Explain the offside rule in soccer.

The offside rule frequently confuses new soccer players and spectators. An explantion might benefit from visual and interactive means of presentation. Present a website which clearly explains the rule making the most of the characteristics of the online, interactive environment.

3. Vision Deficiency

Task: Explain short and long-sighted vision.

Problems of short and near-sighted vision are very common. Employing the WWW and its special properties, explain the differences between normal vision, short-sighted vision and long-sighted vision to first year optometry students.

4. Melbourne's (unpredictable) weather

Task: Construct a dynamic web page displaying current weather details in Melbourne.

Look at this website which displays the current temperature and the variation in temperature over a period of time. Devise and implement a different system for dynamically displaying the weather data. Ensure the information of importance is effectively presented.

Part 1: Design Document (DD)

Due date: Friday 14th April, 2000

The DD is web-based and will be assessed online. You will need to post it as a web page on the website of a host-student who you select from your group. Details of the means by which the assignment is to be posted and the groups registered will be announced online in the second week of semester.

Before you can post your DD you will need to post a splash page containing:

Submitted in partial fullfillment of the requirements for FIT5900 Multimedia Programming and the WWW (2000)

This site is the original work of author1, author2, author3, author4

The DD needs to contain [square brackets contain % mark for this assessment]:

The DD will be marked on its design. Don't focus on the technology or your perceptions of what's easy or hard to implement on the web. Marking will be based on the innovation and thought you show in your problem solution (not the difficulty you might have in implementing it) and also the way the DD itself is presented online.

Therefore, the DD should at a minimum include text, images and hyperlinks. You are limited to using a few pages for the DD. Only add material that is necessary to build your case. Unnecessary material will result in loss of marks.
