Australian Wildlife Images

Australia presents some remarkably good opportunities to photograph interesting birds, animals and invertebrates. This web page contains a selection of recent wildlife pictures of interest, and some habitats.

Australian Mammals

A Kangaroo Island Kangaroo with joey at Melbourne Zoo (Image ¿ 2011 Carlo Kopp; Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED / D90).

The Kangaroo Island Kangaroo is a subspecies of the Western Grey Kangaroo (Images ¿ 2011 Carlo Kopp; Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED / D90).

Tree Kangaroos are found on Cape York, often in rainforest habitats. A larger range of species are however found in Papua New Guinea, including this endangered Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo (Images ¿ 2011 Carlo Kopp; Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED / D90).

Above, below, Swamp Wallabies at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria (Images ¿ 2011 Carlo Kopp; Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED / D90).

Above, below, Koalas at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria (Images ¿ 2011 Carlo Kopp; Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED / D90).

The Common Brushtail Possum is a frequent occupant of urban areas and grows to weight of 4.5 kg, although this example could be larger. These are arboreal foragers which often steal petfood and ravage suburban fruit trees. This species is a frequent victim of electrocution on high voltage lines - I once observed an example fall from from a 7 metre power pole following a large blue discharge and bang, but recover and scurry off when I arrived to bury what I assumed was a deceased beast. The example depicted is also unusual as it has the less common rusty brown face and shoulder colouring (Images ¿ 2012 Carlo Kopp; Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED / D90 with internal flash).

Australian Reptiles

The Coastal Taipan, above and below, evolved a subdued camouflage well suited to the undergrowth in which it hunts its prey (Images ¿ 2011 Carlo Kopp; Sekor C 45 mm f/2.8N + Fotodiox Pro adaptor / D90).
