Title: Quality Framework for VoIP over WMN

The objective of this research is to develop a framework to ensure voice quality for VoIP over IEEE 802.11 based wireless mesh networks. We focus in the development of analytical models to estimate VoIP call capacity over single and multihop wireless networks for the most popular codecs. We investigate VoIP call capacities under different medium access mechanisms (e.g., DCF and PCF) and different network configuration which will be useful in network design and planning. We devise and investigate new techniques to utilise path aggregation and splitting up collision domain to increase call capacity. The analyses are done with voice quality as the limiting factor to ensure that voice quality does not degrade under high load. The mathematical models are validated through simulations using OPNET modeler software.

Title: Automatic Heterogeneous Wireless Mesh Networks

Mesh networking is a way to route data, voice and instructions between nodes. Wireless Mesh Networking (WMN) is implemented over a Wireless LAN. It provides continuous connection and reconfiguration around blocked paths by "hopping" from node to node until a connection can be established. We rely on several wireless technologies to provide voice and data at home and on the road. New products with wireless capability appear everyday. But there are several limitations in the current work of WMN. Therefore, the objective of this research is to improve the security, scalability and capability of WMN to integrate heterogeneous wireless networks. Experiments related to this research will initially be simulated using OPNET modeler software. Then some experiments will be done in real world environment.
