"Much to learn you still have... my old padawan.”  yoda

About me

I have been studying my PhD and working as a research assistant at the Clayton School of IT, Monash University, Australia since July 2007.

Before that, I got my BSc degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Hacettepe University, Turkey and MSc degree in Software Engineering/Management from Middle East Technical University, Turkey. During my masters I also worked as a software engineer in ESRI, Turkey, specialised in geographic information systems.

Research

I am a member of the Adaptive Diagrams and Documents Group at Clayton School of IT, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, and studying my PhD under the supervision of Professor Kim Marriott.

My research interests include:

At the moment my research focus is on developing a new multi-modal computer system to present graphics to blind people. This system uses a multi-touch display for tracking the positions of the user's fingers. It also gives haptic feedback via small vibrating motors attached on the fingers, and uses audio (2D/3D) & speech feedback to guide navigation and to provide non-geometric information about the graphic elements. This project is the main part of my PhD.

I am also interested in a couple of topics that are related to my PhD project. First topic is the use of new interaction techniques and displays.

Second topic is to construct new versions of diagrams automatically from the original diagrams by providing a good presentation of elements that satisfy some constraints related to layout, interaction, and display devices.

.

Third topic is to develop an adaptive diagram presentation system which is aware of the context and the conditions of the user  to learn and infer a better way of interaction, and adapt itself accordingly.

Interests

Apart from my PhD research, I am also a member of the Casual Robotics Group where we build and program LEGO Mindstorms NXT robots. In particular, I am working on a project whose aim is to teach programming skills to high school students. This project involves using Scratch and Python to control the robots.
