White-backed Magpie

Mundane as Australian suburbia might be, we often do get interesting visitors. This multi-part web page contains a selection of recent wildlife pictures of interest.

The White-backed Magpie (Cracticus tibicen tyrannica) is the dominant Magpie species in Victoria and commonly found in parks, nature reserves, campus grounds and inevitably, backyards. The Magpie is territorial, often attacking humans during the nesting season, and will predate on smaller birds, mammals or reptiles, opportunity permitting. They are exceptional songbirds. Magpie are also commonly known to steal petfood from backyards if left unattended.

Imagery mostly produced using a Nikon D90 and a range of lenses, including the  Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED autofocus telephoto zoom lens, and the Mamiya Sekor A 200mm f/2.8 APO manual focus apochromatic telephoto prime lens. Some images also produced using a Mamiya 645AFD, with the 55-110mm f/4.5 AF zoom lens.
