as
Australian
suburbia might be, we often do get interesting visitors. This web page contains a selection
of recent
suburban wildlife
pictures of interest.
The
Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis moluccus), is
now well established in Australian suburbs, along the Eastern seaboard
of the continent. These photos of pair of birds were
captured at the lake on the Clayton campus of Monash University, in
late January, 2014, using a Sigma AF 100-300mm f/4 EX IF HSM APO lens
on a
Nikon D7100, with a SLIK LP III monopod.
When I moved to Melbourne thirty years ago, I had no idea what a Australian White Ibis was - the Ibis was an exotic bird described in books about Ancient Egypt and sub-Saharan Africa. Since the 1990s, they have become common in Melbourne, and moreso in other Eastern seaboard cities, to the point of often becoming regarded as urban pests. This is the same problem it would appear that some European nations have with the introduced and closely related African Sacred Ibis. This is an excellent report on the invasion of Australian urban areas by the Australian White Ibis: http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2007/11/15/2182311.htm Numbers of the Australian White Ibis have evidently increased since. I often see them soaring over the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Photos and text ¿ 2014
