Foundation and purpose:
Informatics is the European word for Computer Science.
The Australian Informatics Olympiad Committee officially
formed on Sat. 7 Feb 1998 with a view to
organising an National
Australian Informatics Competition
(planned first for late 1998),
and
selecting
Australian
secondary students for
the
International Olympiad in Informatics (planned first for 1999).
Of the six current
international science olympiads,
the International Olympiad in Informatics
is the third youngest and the second largest, the only larger one
being the oldest one, Mathematics.
