A Conference on Generative Computational Processes in the Electronic Arts.
December 1st-3rd 1999, Melbourne, Australia

Call for participation (text version)

First Iteration begins an annual series of conferences for those interested in generative computational processes in the electronic arts. The conference will be held on December 1st-3rd 1999 at Monash University, Melbourne Australia.

The event is intended to provide an environment conducive to discourse between artists and researchers in this exciting area of new media art.

The symposium will include presentations that focus on technical and aesthetic ideas in electronic art, covering a range of theoretical and practical issues.

--o-> Submissions are sought in the following areas:

  • Rule-based generative systems
  • Artificial Life
  • Non-linear systems
  • Fractals, iterative systems
  • Computational simulation of creative processes
  • Artificial Intelligence methods
  • Human-computer interfaces for artists

  • Computer music composition and performance
  • Sound Synthesis
  • Computer Graphics and Animation
  • Performance-based and interactive art works
  • Virtual Reality and real-time simulation

--o-> Submissions may take the form of:

  • Poster presentations
  • Technical presentations
  • Artist's presentations
  • Scholarly papers (for peer review)

  • Performances / live works
  • Installation works
  • Software demonstrations
  • Video works

The focus is on method: This being the method used in the construction of electronic art or the method used for the construction of tools for its creation. Technical sketches, posters, papers and presentations will need to maintain this focus.



--o-> Poster / Technical / Artist's Presentation

A written proposal must be submitted for these forms of presentation. The proposal should take the form of a brief summary or abstract (~100 words) of the presentation, followed by a single page describing the proposed presentation content and its relevance to the conference.

If an artist's talk is proposed, please include also a brief biography of the presenter and a summary of exhibitions, as well as other relevant visual or aural material.

Upon acceptance, presenters' will be asked to provide a short written or pictorial summary of their presentation for inclusion in the conference proceedings.

--o-> Scholarly paper

Authors intending to submit a paper for peer review must submit a 500 word abstract. Following provisional acceptance, completed papers will be reviewed and authors notified of final acceptance. Camera ready copies must then be submitted by the deadline below.

Papers must not exceed 10 pages in length including diagrams and appendices. Papers should be prefaced with a title page listing the paper title, author(s) name and affiliation, a paper abstract of not more than 500 words and a list of keywords. Ensure that the relevance of the paper to the conference is made clear in the abstract.

--o-> Performances / Installations / Software demo's / Video works

Supporting visual or aural material must be submitted for these forms of work as well as a brief written summary describing the work and its relevance to the conference. Additionally, a list of hardware / software / space / time requirements must be included with the submission.

Upon acceptance, presenters will be asked to provide a short written or pictorial summary of their presentation for inclusion in the conference proceedings.

--o-> Guidelines for submission of material

Acceptable formats for submission are listed below. Please note that unless stamped, self-addressed envelopes are enclosed with the submission, we regret that submitted material will not be returned to the sender.

Submissions from outside Australia may encounter customs delays. Please ensure adequate time if sending material through the international mail system. We recommend the use of an international courier for fastest delivery. Please mark all international submissions "Educational material only. No commercial value.". The conference will not pay for tariffs or customs charges which may be incurred if this statement is not declared.
