- There should be sample code eg. for multiple viewports. I found the concept about viewport very difficult to understand. I think the glitch program would be useful if I was able to install it.
Also, I found it hard to understand about the theory of the view volume and how to apply it to coding. I also found the material, normal and lighting theory difficult to understand.
I think you should have sample code on how to deal with aspect ratio of multiple viewports and sample code for material, normal and lighting.
I also think there should be a 1 hour prac/tute every fort night so that we are able to discuss with our classmates about the assignment.
However, I did found the forum useful. Consultation was ok for understanding theory but not really the programming side of computer graphics.

- Although I enjoy the course, I found it difficult to apply the theory learnt in the lectures to programming. I still definitely think there should be tutorials because we can have further discussions about computer graphics and on how to solve the assignment problem. I believe tutorials/dicussions with classmates help me understand the material better than simply going to lectures.

- This year, I found the lecture to be better than last year's but I still found the materials on 3d difficult to understand. I think the lecturer should emphasize about the view volume, that it faces the negative z direction, that y-axis points up, etc and explain concepts such as world/object coordinates by using example codes to explain the concepts.
Also, the lecturer should give ideas on how to go about solving the assignment. For example, this year when we had to model the solar system, I still found it difficult to understand how to model the elliptical nature of the orbit and the order of rotation.
I think sample codes eg. for assignment 1 would be useful because we would be able to understand where we went wrong in our assignment and use them to help us with assignment 2. The hints the lecturer gave on how to improve the assignment was useful but I believe seeing the solution will see the mistake/misunderstanding I have when doing the assignment.

- I enjoy this year's assignment better than last year's because the lecturer gave us useful sites on how to go about doing the solar system.
Assignment 1 was fun and the difficulty level just right and helped me understand about primitives and transformations.
For assignment 2, I think the lecturer should have pointed us to a useful site about the elliptical orbits because I found researching for computer graphics very time consuming. Also, physics concept such as velocity/position for the interaction was quite hard to understand. If the lecturer pointed us to useful sites/references then it would make doing assignment 2 much easier.
The sample solar system code was very useful.
Last year, if the lecturer gave us a site on how to code the terrain then I believe I would find assignment 2 much easier to do.

- Very well set assessment. I know this has been said in previous years, and nothing seems to be have been done about it, but I'll have another crack. It'd be nice to get some more marks for all the effort put into the assignments. 70% exam assessment sucks hard. And 15% for 5 full days of coding is a bit rough.
It would be good to see the marks breakdown with the assignment so that particular features can be prioritised appropriately. For instance, I ended spending far too mcuh time stuffing around getting the orbits of my planets correct, the time I spent figuring out how to apply the argument of perihelion would probably have been better put into making the MV Howard fly.

- I'd like to see some more complex sample code to play with.
I think the assessment would be more helpful in the form of one large assignment, similiar in scale to assignment two, due at the end of semester. Plus a few smaller, regular (perhaps fortnightly) exercises (probably practical programming tasks).
Such as, write your own LookAt() function for OpenGL, use it animate a spinning teapot. Implement Bresen-whatsits algorithm in C.
The sort of stuff you could test and mark with a script.

The openGL primer was great for the assignment work! compact and precise. I'm not sure whether people without strong programming background got much out of it though.

- Glitch is a good idea to teach many students about very simple concepts like transformations, materials and allows them to see an immediate impact when changing the code.
A) I preferred trying these things out myself (I love programming, so I didn't mind)
C) I HATE (say that again) installing programs under linux. It is a pain in the behind when you need to get special libraries, link the shared objects, etc... just to get something to run. I know this is unrealistic since everyone has a different version (and configuration) of linux, but a proper installation tutorial would have been good. Just extracting the files and running make just doesn't always work.
Or, even better - make a windows release! I'm sure this would make GLitch more accessible for students.

The second assignment was pretty tough (especially when you want to get all the marks), but it has taught me a great deal about 3d application programming and I'm decided to keep creating graphics applications.

- Assignment 2 felt that much harder because assignment 1 was a piece of cake. Hunting for the transformation matrix to rotate a vector about an arbitrary axis was quite an adventure, since the programming site I got it from had errors in the matrix and I kept trying to find the errors in my surrounding code for why it just didn't work.
Both assignments were interesting and informative though.

I greatly appreciate the presence of the lecturer on the feedback forum (not every lecturer does).
I would have liked a more detailed lecture on research material that would give ideas away as to how to do generative systems. I found that really interesting and will (try to) create simple generative systems during the break and when I get some time. That was really interesting!
I liked the idea of a small video each lecture - makes you appreciate computer graphics just the more XD
The second assignment, as I mentioned, was tough. A little more informations as to how to solve certain problems would have been good (rotation about arbitrary axis, manually aligning one coordinate system with another).

- the lecture notes doesn't have much information. It focuses much about the theory part, leaving programming part of opengl uncovered. It's pretty hard to understand certain topics, like hidden buffer removal without some examples. We end up knowing just little about opengl. It's not much we can learn if we just read the theory without using it. I consider my opengl knowledge to be very limited.
The notes just talked very little about lighting. It's actually an important topic. It should also cover texture. It really looks bad if a 3D graphics program doens't have proper lighting and doesn't use texture.

- I don't know the assessment yet. No assignment has been marked yet. Because of this, we don't really learn our mistakes from assignment 1 and aren't able to avoid these mistakes when doing assignment 2. Assignment 2 is hard because we have to use all sorts of new opengl functions that we have never used before. e.g. using clipping, hidden surface removal, lighting at the same time.

- I took this subject because I wanted to learn the concepts and practical use of computer graphics. Concepts are important but it's better if we can learn the concept from the practical part. The lecture notes are not useful for working on the assignment. Much information about opengl has to come from text book. It's better to put more information on the lecture notes. It's better to have more assignments so that we learn part by part from the assignment. Assignment 1 is easy so it's fine. Assignment 2 is not easy. If we can learn, say clipping and hidden surface removal in one assigment first, it will prepare us better for harder assignment.
I really like graphics stuff and actually plan to have research in graphics. But this unit doesn't prepare me much to do so.

I believe smaller assignment-tutorials are better in assessing the students. There should be smaller "chunks" of assignment being given out that will help us understand the assignment better.
Smaller chunks assignment could be, inplementing a mouse moving system, do a 2D planatery motion display. Then receive feedback on what's the best strategy or coding practice. And later, the assignments can be combined to form a complete project.
Expecting students to complete the Assignment 2 in about 6 weeks is a non-trivial task. Moreover the 70%-30% split between final exams and assignments is not a true split in terms of efforts and makrs awarded. I have to complete teh assignment at the expense of doing revision for this subject. There simply wasn't sufficient time to prepare for the exams.

- There should be solutions for the tutorials (because our Malaysian lecturer didn't provide any solutions) online. Contrary to what other lecturers do, providing solutions online will help those who couldn't keep up with the subject. We can refer to the solutions and get help from there. We spend less time buggin our lecturers, imagining him having to answer the same question 10 times if 10 individual approach him with the same problem.
Secondly, there should be a consolidation of the material presented. Although it is the student's responsibility to do his homework and prepare for the subject. It would definitely help if he can see the connections and big picture of the transform in PRACTICAL, instead of just mathematical questions and theoritical concepts.
What I meant by practical is ... develop a simple 3D engine that put into practice all the transforms or stuff that we've learned.
I believe in teaching more by teaching LESS. Many concepts in the lectures can be learned by the students themselves. Why re-iterate what they can glean from textbooks. What they can't learn themselves -- the practical aspect of the subject-- that is what we are here for. I mean I can just go home and read the textbook to understand the subject, why should I attend the lectures if it's going to be something I can learn myself? Instead, I want to attend the lectures and labs because there are things which I cannot learn by myself -- implementing a simple 3D engine, writing me own graphics algorithm.
Well ... these are just my thoughts on this subject.

- some of the notation in Angel-a top down approach was different to what was in the lecture notes, particularly for the 3d algebra. This was a bit confusing. I also looked over my MAT1841 notes, which again, was different to what was in the book.
Other books i borrowed from Hargrave library were quite useful for the programming aspect. They didnt cover as much of the maths in detail as angel, but enough to understand what was going on.

Overall this was a very good subject in terms of presentation and the material available, and the work it produces. Computer graphics is something which you're obviously passionate about which can only improve the quality of the course further.

- Mr. Tham doesn't know much about computer graphics. I think this is his first time teaching computer graphics and first time learning opengl. he has diffulty in coveying some topics.
I doubt how he is gonna mark our assignments and exams, since his style is that anything that he doesn't understand, he will deduct marks. I think our exam will be marked very down in this case. and assignment as well.
Or Dr. McCormack is going to re-mark our Malaysian students exam papers? there are just 11 of us. Hopefully he will. I have lost confidence in Mr. Tham.
