16: Framing Sound

Interestingly, sound itself has escaped the screen. With the advent of many new sound technologies such as Dolby digital and psycho-acoustic sound spatialization techniques, it is possible to create 'landscapes of sound' that do not exhibit the frame problem. It seems that technically at least, a sound based virtual environment is easier to produce than a visual one. Despite this new technological freedom for sound, because it is rarely considered to have enough merit to stand on it's own (unless its music), such advanced spatialization technologies seem only to exist for cinema, or cinematic derived experiences. In this case either the sound is always subservient to the image, or, even in the better cases, the sound's primary focus is to locate the viewer in relation to the screen.
