Diffs and Axles.
- 1969 ?: Stronger Salisbury differential and axle
introduced on rear of LWB models.
Charlie Wright (cw117@mole.bio.cam.ac.uk) [6/'95]
reports that:
my 1970 IIa did not have Salisbury rear diff.
I know it was not available until the Series III [LA: 1971] as standard.
After-Market.
Detroit `lockers' replace the diff' spider, planet gears and side gears
with three plates.
The centre plate carries dog-clutches/cams which drive the side plates
which drive the half-shafts.
The locker allow the outer, faster-rotating wheel,
to overtake the diff' carrier.
It is not just a free-wheel because it works correctly in reverse.
All the torque goes to the more slowly rotating wheel.
The action is not always smooth and can affect handling,
so lockers are sometimes advised against for SWB vehicles.
Mark Ritter recently fitted a Lock-Rite locker
to his 1994 Discovery [here]
and is very happy with the result on and off road.
