Dan Aykroyd and Judi Belushi (wife of the late John Belushi) have
recently requested that the show's title should be changed from "A
Tribute to the Blues Brothers" to "The Official Tribute to the Blues
Brothers - Live On Stage". They are both said to be overwhelmed by the
continued popularity of the characters made famous by "Saturday Night
Live", and the subsequent movies of the Blues Brothers.
History of the Show
It began life in The Hares and Hounds pub. Con O'Neil (an award winning
actor who went on to play the role of Jake in the original version of the
show) was singing a couple of Blues Brothers numbers, and had invited his
friend David Pugh (of David Pugh Ltd production company) to watch. David
had never heard of the Blues Brothers, but by the end of the evening he
was inspired to produce the first version of the show, along with Con, and
with David Leland as director, and Tony McCormick in charge of the music.
It was first performed at the Hampstead Theatre Club as a one off
performance, but within two months it was opening at the Whitehall Theatre
in London's West End. They scheduled a benefit performance to help their
cause for more action for the Lebanon hostages, as John McCarthy was an
avid Blues Brothers fan. The performance was staged on July 8th 1991, the
same day as McCarthy was released. The show received universally
sensational reviews, and the season was extended at the Whitehall from 6
weeks to giving over 450 performances to 150,000 people. In April 1992 it
was nominated for the Laurence Olivier award for Most Outstanding
Entertainment of 1992. In 1993, the show did a successful tour of Europe.
1994 saw tours of Germany and the UK, and in 1995, the show operned in
Holland, Vienna, Australia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, South Africa and the
USA. It is currently on tour throughout the UK with Brad Henshaw as
'Jake', and Simon Foster as 'Elwood'.
