Here are some more of the pictures Alex took. It was pretty cold which meant there were few people crazy enough to wander around Nara Park at the time...
Alan walking towards
the entrance to Todaiji Temple. (This building is the entrance way. The temple itself is not visible.) |
Todaiji temple. (This building is just ENORMOUS. It houses several HUGE statues of the Buddah, a couple of monolithic wooden warriors and various other amazing things. One of the Buddahs weighs in at 837 tonnes... not to be wrestled against in a Sumo bout!) |
Alan looking at the 1300 year old, 4 meter bell he rang on New Year's Eve. Where have all the crowds gone? (I waited in the icy New Year's Eve air for hours, in a very, very long queue to ring this bell) |
View from the balcony of the hillside shrine in Nara Park where we argued about genetic engineering as the sun went down. | One of the fearsome Japanese warriors which guards my front door. | The other fearsome warrior which guards my front door. In the winter cold these warriors are somewhat sluggish... maybe they're frozen solid? It seems like lousy weather for being a security guard. |
