Computer Science: Third Year

Welcome.

Welcome to third year Computer Science. Your year co-ordinator is Dr Graham Farr. He is located in room number 110 of the Computer Science Building and, also, can be reached by phone on 990 55201 (Extension 55201 if using a Monash phone).

If you have any queries relating to a particular Computer Science subject first check the WWW site http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/subjects/ For further clarification of your queries make an attempt to see the subject lecturer concerned before meeting with the year co-ordinator. Any major queries or complaints should be in writing so that the year co-ordinator can keep a record. As far as possible, you should meet with the year co-ordinator during his consultation times. These are posted on his door; at present, they are:

On Allocation of CSE3301/CSC3010 Projects

The following information is relevant only for those who are enrolled in CSE3301/CSC3010 (Project), SECOND semester.

A list of projects and their descriptions are available from http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~gfarr/admin/csc3000.html . For further details about a particular project you can see the supervisor concerned. You need to specify a number of projects, ranked in order of your preference, in which you are interested (that is, the most preferred project to be ranked 1, the second preference to be ranked 2, and so on). Every attempt will be made to allocate a project which you would prefer to do. However given the constraint that each project cannot have more than a certain number of students, it may happen that you are allocated a project outside your choice. This will happen especially if many other students have similar project preferences like yours. It is advisable, for your benefit, to specify as many projects as you can. You should in fact give ranks to all projects on offer. Note that giving only a few choices means taking more risk of being allocated a project entirely outside your liking. Also note that the time/day of recording your selection does not influence the project allocation. However, if you do not enter your selection within the time specified below, you will have no control over the project to be allocated to you.

You can record your selection using the web page http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~projsel/ up until 5:00pm on Monday 20th December 1999.

Make sure you have your student ID number ready when you go to that web page to enter your selection. In case of difficulty in getting access to the system see Mr. Jamie Scuglia, Room No. 141, Building 26 (Computer Science).

The project allocation list will be posted on the third year notice board and on the web on Tuesday 21 December 1999. The supervisors will inform you, normally through the third year notice board, of the times of their project meetings. These meetings will start on the 4th January 2000, so it is advisable to be prompt in checking the allocation lists.

The due date for the project report, and a general guide for project reports, can be found at http://www.cs.monash.edu.au/~gfarr/admin/csc3000.html The description is quite general and certain requirements may not be appropriate for your project. It is your responsibility to check with your supervisor regarding what is expected for your project report.

Best wishes for your studies this Semester.
