Feature Publications

"Self-Selecting Homochiral Quadruple-Stranded Helicates and Control of Supramolecular Chirality", S.A. Boer and D.R. Turner. Chem. Commun., 2015, 51, 17375-17378.

ABSTRACT

Enantiomeric M4L4 helical cages have been prepared whose supramolecular chirality is induced by the chemical chirality of the self-sorting amino acid-derived ligands that are used. Using scrambled diastereomeric ligands or achiral glycine-derived ligands yields analogous complexes yet turns off the supramolecular chirality by producing centrosymmetric cages.

Feature Publications

"Synthetic Approaches for the Incorporation of Free Amine Functionalities in Porous Coordination Polymers", A.J. Emerson, A. Chahine, S.R. Batten and D.R. Turner. Coord. Chem. Rev., 2018, 365, 1-22.

ABSTRACT

This review examines the three major synthetic routes that are used in order to affect this chemical modification of porous frameworks; (i) post-synthetic grafting of amines to coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, (ii) incorporation of ligands that contain terminal amine groups, and (iii) incorporation of ligands that contain amine embedded within the core of the ligand. The relative merits and shortcomings of these different synthetic approaches are discussed alongside examples of the materials generated using each method.

Feature Publications

"Metal-Organic Frameworks as Stationary Phases for Mixed-Mode Separation Applications", C.S. Hawes, Y. Nolvachai, C. Kulsing, G.P. Knowles, A.L. Chaffee, P.J. Marriott, S.R. Batten and D.R. Turner. Chem. Commun., 2014, 50, 3735-3737.

ABSTRACT

Polymorphic metal-organic framework (MOF) materials offer a platform for small-scale separation of complex mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polar compounds. Retention factors show dependence on both analyte dimensions and polarity, suggesting mixed-mode separation, allowing complete resolution of some analytes from multi-component mixtures.

Feature Publications

"Liquid-phase Enantioselective Chromatographic Separations Using Interpenetrated, Homochiral Framework Materials", S.A. Boer, Y. Nolvachai, C. Kulsing, L.J. McCormick, P.J. Marriott and D.R. Turner. Chem. Eur. J., 2014, 20, 11308-11312.

ABSTRACT

Two new enantiopure 2D→3D interpenetrated materials used as stationary liquid chromatographic phases are shown to resolve selected racemic mixtures with enantiomeric and chemical selectivity. Enantioselectivity is enhanced for the metal-organic material in comparison to the control experiment when only the pure chiral ligand was employed.

Feature Publications

"Ultramicroporous MOF with High Concentration of Vacant CuII Sites", L.J. McCormick, S.G. Duyker, A.W. Thornton, C.S. Hawes, M.R. Hill, V.K. Peterson, S.R. Batten and D.R. Turner. Chem. Mater., 2014, 26, 4640-4646.

ABSTRACT

An ultramicroporous MOF is reported that contains 0.35 nm nanotube-like channels with an unprecedented concentration of vacant CuII coordination sites. Neutron powder diffraction and molecular dynamics simulations show the close packing of single rows of guests within the tubular nanostructure and interaction of CO2 with the exposed metal sites
